Simons is essentially Doster's effort to preserve the legacy of the area. For decades, he heard local residents utter the famous sentiment that someone should have recorded so-and-so's recollections before she died. Reading the obituary of a former elementary school teacher inspired him to set up face-to-face and telephone interviews that began his oral archaeological dig.

Doster works at Vanderbilt University and lives in Nashville with his wife, Anne. Subscribe now to be the first to hear about specials and upcoming releases.

You learn so much from the elderly—what to and not to do—and how simple life was back then. I so enjoyed these narratives. Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. Simon's but little knowledge of the history of the area in the 20th century. I was really happy to stumble across this collection of oral histories from people who mostly were born in the 's, 30's, and 40's. Some are the descendants of slave owners and some of slaves, and their tales provide an especially interesting glimpse into earlier life in this area.

After finishing the book, it's fun to read a name of a business, subdivision, or landmark, and know something about the family that provided the name. For example, Redfern Village on St. Simon's comes from Paul Redfern, funded by the City of Brunswick to attempt the first, unfortunately ill-fated, flight from the east coast to South America. Great idea on Mr.

Doster's part to preserve these pieces of history, and certainly well worth the price! Loved reading about all the people I have known or heard about for years. So yes I loved the book sending it to my sister in California to read. I know she is going to love it too. Thank you, Cheryl Gomez Howell. Always interested in publications about St. Enjoyed reading and sharing this one. I live in this area
